Fatal Shooting in Rural Upstate NY: 20-Year-Old Woman Killed in Case of Mistaken Driveway
A tragic incident in rural upstate New York has left a 20-year-old woman died after she and three others accidentally turned into the wrong driveway while looking for a friend’s house. The incident occurred on Saturday when a man, identified as 65-year-old Kevin Monahan, fired two shots from his front porch, hitting their vehicle and fatally striking Kaylin Gillis, who was a passenger in the car.
Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy confirmed the news and stated that Monahan has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death. It is unclear at this time whether Monahan has retained an attorney. According to Sheriff Murphy, the area where the shooting took place has poor cell phone service and it’s easy to get lost on the rural dirt roads.
Details of the Tragic Incident and Charges Against Kevin Monahan
This tragic incident comes just days after another shooting incident in Kansas City, where a Black teenager was shot twice by a White homeowner after going to the wrong address to pick up his siblings. The shooter, Andrew Lester, faces two felony charges in the case, reigniting the debate over so-called “stand your ground” laws.
It is important to note that both Monahan and Gillis are White, and the shooting appears to be a case of mistaken identity. Gillis and the rest of the group quickly left the scene and called 911 for help. The investigation is ongoing, and we will update as more information becomes available. This senseless act of violence highlights the importance of staying vigilant and aware of our surroundings, especially in unfamiliar areas.
