Magnitude 6.2 Earthquake Strikes Off Northern Japan
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the coast of northern Japan, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The quake was centered about 100 kilometers (62 miles) east of the city of Sendai, and its epicenter was at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
Tsunami Warning Issued
The agency issued a tsunami warning for the area, but it was lifted shortly after the quake. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The quake was felt in Tokyo, but there were no reports of damage in the capital.
Aftershocks Expected
The agency said aftershocks were expected in the coming days. Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world’s most seismically active areas. In 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Japan, triggering a massive tsunami that killed more than 18,000 people and caused a nuclear disaster.
