Blastomycosis Outbreak Linked to Paper Mill in Michigan

The local health department in Michigan’s Delta and Menominee counties has identified 93 confirmed or probable cases of blastomycosis, a rare fungal infection caused by the fungus Blastomyces. The outbreak is believed to be associated with a paper mill in Escanaba.

What is Blastomycosis?

Blastomycosis is a fungal infection that is caused by inhaling microscopic fungal spores. The fungus is commonly found in moist soil and decomposing matter like wood or leaves. The infection is rare, with only one or two cases per 100,000 people reported in states where blastomycosis is a reportable condition.

Symptoms and Treatment of Blastomycosis

Although most people who inhale the spores won’t get sick, some may develop symptoms like fever, cough, chest pain, trouble breathing, night sweats, fatigue, weight loss, and muscle or joint pain. In rare cases, the infection can spread outside the lungs to places like the skin, bones, brain, and spinal cord.

Blastomycosis does not spread from person to person, and it is treated with antifungal medication that must be taken for a period ranging from six months to a year, depending on the severity of the illness and the person’s overall health.

Preventative Measures

To prevent blastomycosis, it’s important to avoid disturbing soil or other materials that may contain the fungus. People who work in jobs that involve excavation or other activities that disturb soil or decaying matter should wear protective clothing and masks. It’s also important to avoid areas with bird or bat droppings, as these can contain the fungus.

The blastomycosis outbreak in Michigan is a concerning public health issue, and it’s important for people to be aware of the symptoms and take preventative measures to avoid exposure to the fungus.
