Listeria Outbreak Linked to Deli Meat: 2 Dead, 28 Sickened Across 12 States
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating a listeria outbreak linked to deli meats. The outbreak has sickened 28 people in 12 states, and two people have died.
The CDC is advising people not to eat deli meats unless they are reheated to an internal temperature of 165°F or until steaming hot.
What is Listeria?
Listeria is a bacteria that can cause serious illness. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for serious illness from listeria.
What to Do If You Think You May Have Listeriosis
If you think you may have listeriosis, see a doctor right away. Tell your doctor about the foods you have eaten in the past few days.
How to Prevent Listeriosis
- Wash your hands, cutting boards, and utensils with hot, soapy water after preparing food.
- Clean your refrigerator regularly.
- Cook food to the proper temperature.
- Refrigerate leftovers promptly.
- Avoid eating unpasteurized milk and cheese.
The CDC is working with state and local health officials to investigate the outbreak and identify the source of the contamination. The agency is also working with the food industry to prevent future outbreaks.
