Mass Poisoning of Street Cats in La Carlota, Spain

"Investigation Launched into Mass Poisoning of Street Cats in La Carlota, Spain

In a distressing incident, Spanish authorities have initiated an investigation into the suspected mass poisoning of nearly 50 street cats in La Carlota, a village just outside the southern city of Cordoba. The incident was discovered on December 31, with the bodies of at least 10 cats found at the local dump where the feline colony resided.

Local residents who made the grim discovery alerted the animal rights party PACMA, which subsequently filed a complaint with the Guardia Civil police, citing the “mass poisoning of a 47-strong feline colony.” The complaint reported that some of the cats were found inside nearby containers, while others were lying in the street. Only one survivor, a young male cat in poor health, was found.

Authorities, responding to the complaint, dispatched officers from the Guardia Civil’s nature protection service, Seprona, to investigate. They are looking into whether the deaths resulted from poisoning or other causes, aiming to identify and hold accountable any culprits involved.

Notably, a new animal welfare law that came into effect in September imposes more severe penalties for cruelty leading to an animal’s death. Offenders found guilty could now face up to three years in prison, a significant increase from the previous penalty of 18 months.

In a separate operation, Spanish police announced the successful dismantling of a puppy trafficking ring. Eight individuals were arrested, and over 100 animals were rescued during four searches conducted as part of the operation. The ring allegedly imported puppies from Hungary and Slovakia, selling them in Spain with forged documents.

These developments underscore the commitment to enforcing animal welfare laws and combating illegal activities that pose a threat to animals in Spain. Authorities are actively working to protect and ensure the well-being of animals across the country.
