Ski Masks Banned by Philadelphia Transit Police

Philadelphia transit police have announced a ban on ski masks known as “shiestys” after a teen was murdered on a bus by someone wearing one. The masks, popular in urban fashion, have become street fashion items in the young African American community in recent years.

Charles Lawson, the police chief of SEPTA, the city’s rail, bus and subway system, announced that no one wearing the masks would be allowed on the system. “Come on SEPTA property wearing your shiesty, and you will be engaged by police,” he said.

The balaclavas have been adopted by music and sports stars and popular fashion brands have begun making their own. British brand Paul Smith sells a striped one for $195. However, police note that face masks are often used in committing crime.

Ban Follows Murder of Teen on Bus

The situation is currently under investigation and more information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
