“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” Faces Ban in UAE Following Transgender Support Backlash

The latest Spider-Man animation from Sony, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” will not grace the silver screens of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to a wave of backlash stemming from its expression of support for transgender rights. Despite being originally scheduled for release on June 22, the film has been removed from the upcoming films list on major cinema operators’ websites in the Gulf state.

VOX Cinemas, a prominent cinema company operating in the UAE and the Gulf region, confirmed the film’s absence in response to inquiries on Facebook. However, no specific reasons were provided for the decision. Similarly, Majid Al Futtaim Entertainment, the owner of VOX Cinemas, remained silent on the matter, declining to comment.

The controversy surrounding “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” revolves around a scene featuring a flag with the message “protect trans kids.” Online discussions in the UAE have criticized the film, with some social media posts warning parents about the perceived promotion of homosexuality and gender transformation. The film’s release has become a topic of contention, reflecting differing views within the community.

Exploring the Controversy and its Impact on Cinema Release

While the UAE announced in 2021 that it would no longer censor cinematic releases, the recent statement by the UAE Media Council suggests a shift in its stance. The council stated that it will prohibit the circulation or publication of content conflicting with UAE values and principles, without providing further clarification. Censorship controversies are not new in the Middle East, as demonstrated by the banning of Disney’s “Lightyear” in the region last year due to a same-sex kiss.

Beyond the UAE, it remains uncertain whether “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” will be shown in cinemas in Saudi Arabia, as the film vetting body declined to comment on the matter. VOX Cinemas has also removed the film from its “coming soon” pages in Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait, indicating a broader impact on the film’s release in the region.
